Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century

Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century is an animated series that lasted two seasons, created  by Sandy Ross and produced by DiC and Scottish television.

The story is set in 22nd Century New London, where Beth Lestrade of New Scotland Yard  is chasing a French rogue geneticist named Martin Fenwick. She realised that Martin’s companion is none other than the 19th century criminal mastermind, Professor James Moriarty. Moriarty in this story, however, is not the real Moriarty, this one is a clone (DNA was taken from his corpse which Holmes buried in a Swiss cave).

Enter famous biologist Sir Evan Hargreaves whose latest work was the invention of cell rejuvenation. Beth discovers that Holmes’ body is preserved in a glass-walled, honey-filled coffin in the basement of New Scotland Yard. She then takes the body to Sir Evan, and the biologist uses cell rejuvenation to make Holmes  young again.

Beth Lestrade is actually a descendant of Inspector Lestrade and has read Dr. Watson’s notes about his Adventures with Holmes. She made her compudroid or the law enforcement robot, read Dr. Watson’s notes (She actually calls the droid Watson, too). Amazingly, the droid started emulating the personality of the doctor. Holmes gets his Baker Street home back (which was made into a museum), and together with compudroid Watson who started assuming the face, voice, and everything about the doctor, run around New London to combat Moriarty, and to solve crimes.

Jason Gray-Stanford voices Sherlock Holmes, John Payne as Dr. Watson, Akiko Morison as Inspector Beth Lestrade, and Richard Newman as Professor Moriarty.

I don’t know what you’ll make of this, but it’s amusing just watching it.

Game of Thrones new Season 2 trailer: Power and Grace

War is coming, indeed. The new trailer shows us almost two minutes new footage, including the Baratheon brothers facing off in Storm’s End. Also, Jeyne Westerling is revealed, Robb Stark’s love interest makes an appearance in the trailer, and of course our favourite Tyrion Lannister conversing with his sister Cersei. If you remember, that was one of the rare moments in the book where Cersei is nice to Tyrion.

Star Trek 2: Leaked Behind the Scenes footage

I feel bad now, for posting leaked information. But the fan-side is getting the better of me. So here it is!

Lucy Liu to play Watson in CBS’ Elementary

Lucy Liu nabbed the part of the beloved companion, John Watson, in the American attempt to modernise the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. She is the first woman to play Watson and, if this show airs, she will be joining actors such as Jude Law, Martin Freeman, Ian Hart, Arthur Lowe, among others, who have portrayed the sidekick.

Elementary’s Sherlock Holmes is living in New York City, and Jonny Lee Miller will be playing the famous sleuth. Robert Doherty is the writer and executive producer, alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.

This is where I will be doing my opinion inflicting…

Hate is such a strong word. I have been told that not hating this is very Anderson of me. They’re probably right.

The reason I don’t hate it is because I am too curious to take notice of how ridiculous this whole thing is. I, too, think that this is just plagiarism, infringement or whatever you want to call it, in another form. Having said that, I don’t think there is harm in giving it a chance, at least in the Pilot-episode stage. If the BBC thinks that, even with a female Watson, the show still infringed copyright, then good. If it airs, and we think it’s bad, then we’ll have justification that this was a horrible idea from the get-go. Give.It.A.Chance…Then.React.

It’s like what students do with homework: copy, paste, and paraphrase. I know for a fact that albeit the little differences the press is depressingly trying to focus on, this will be compared to the BBC Sherlock. And, I’ll admit that I will probably be one of the judgmental lot . Better to start  not being a hypocrite now.

All eyes are on them now.

P.S.

Gender-swap has potential (don’t mess that up).The only problem, though, would be her background, “former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died” *shakes head*

Safe House

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, and stars Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Verm Farmiga, and Brendan Gleeson.

The movie is about a CIA agent, Matt Weston (played by Ryan Reynolds), who is tasked to look after a rogue operative, Tobin Frost (played by Denzel Washington), in a safe house located in Cape Town. But when the safe house is attacked, both are on the run and the CIA agent’s burden of keeping himself safe and at the same time making sure the prisoner remains a prisoner, became even heavier.

Of course, the safe house is not actually safe, or else there wouldn’t have been a story. But, after watching this, I though that Safe House is not exactly the title that I would go for when only 3% of the scenes took place in an actual safe house. I would have gone for Rogue, or something.

I liked how Washington played his character. I was sometimes left unsure if he was just toying with Weston whenever he talks to him. Frost is, in fact, an expert when it comes to manipulation and mind games. So, in a way, Washington gave justice to his character.

But I find that the it gets less interesting after the whole debacle in the stadium where Frost was able to escape Weston. Plus, I would have loved it if the dialogues lasted more than 30 seconds. Every minute is a new action scene, and at some point it really gets very tiring to watch.

If you’re into action movies, this movie did not hold back. But if you’re the kind who likes a good storyline, then you might probably shake your head with this one. It had a lot of potential, just overshadowed by some of the unnecessary action scenes.

This Means War

Directed by McG, this is a movie about two of CIA’s top agents, Foster (played by Chris Pine) and Tuck (played by Tom Hardy)  who are the best friends. No, seriously, they’re like the Holmes and Watson, Lennon and McCartney, and all the other inseparable buds. It was all brotherly love between them, until they found out that they are dating the same woman, Lauren Scott (played by Reese Witherspoon).

I would describe the movie as, probably what couples would watch on dates. It was funny, I’ll give them that. But it was like watching two action dudes attempting to make a romantic-comedy movie work. I liked Chris Pine in Star Trek, and I most definitely loved Tom Hardy in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Inception, but this was just painful.

Also, the movie was a bit predictable. After about 15 or 20 minutes, you would already probably guess how it will end. The fight scenes, not very exciting. I would have loved it if the final few fight scenes was filled with the much needed adrenaline rush.

Although, I appreciated the British humour Tom Hardy provided. The film avoided the cheesy American rom-com lane, and it made the film okay to watch.

The relationship between Hardy’s and Pine’s characters were fun to watch. You kind of forget that they are fighting each other for the girl’s affections, anyone would be drawn to the platonic kind of love the two have for each other, and that was awesome.

I’ll give it a 3 of 5. And I would actually recommend it, I was entertained, maybe you would be, too.

Jack and Jill

Directed by Dennis Dugan, and stars Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, and Al Pacino. Jack and Jill is a story about Jack and Jill Sadelstein’s twin relationship. Jack is a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles, beautiful wife, adorable kids, basically a life any man would want. But he dreads that one event in the year where his sister Jill visits them for Thanksgiving.

It was okay. Okay funny, okay acting. Adam was actually good at being Jill, and surprisingly better than playing Jack. But watching Jill as the screechy, lovelorn woman, you would probably understand why Jack is almost unnoticeable.

Al Pacino was funny. I would not, ever, in a million years, think that he would do a movie like this. But he did, and he was very memorable, and it made watching the movie a bit tolerable.

A lot of old school jokes like the farting and the sweating, which made me cringe a bit because they were a little corny. I would say it’s a typical family movie, but some of the jokes were mean.

I’m still thinking if I would recommend the movie, but if you would ask me how I would rank this, I’ll give it a 2 of 5.

Star Trek 2 set pictures

All came from Yahoo Movies!, Popsugar, Den of Geek, and SFX Magazine

No word yet as to what Benedict Cumberbatch’s role is (we do know it’s a villain). A lot of people are guessing he’s Sybok. But if he is, then his character is not a total “baddie”. Thing is, there’s too much secrecy surrounding this film, he might not even be the villain.Anyway, looks like we are going to witness a Cumberbatch-Quinto fight, I’m definitely looking forward to that.  Oh, and he’s wearing an Enterprise shirt, he might have been on-board before this whole thing with Spock. Plus, it seems Benedict’s character is somewhat immune to the Vulcan nerve pinch, isn’t he suppose to look calm and then collapse. He’s just…screaming.

So, no official title, not a clue as to what the plot will be, but we’ll definitely flock to the cinemas in 2013.

Live long and prosper!
